It keeps the direct heat off, and the fabric is gauzy enough to allow air to circulate. At least thats what I've been told.

That is the whole point of traveling overland by car. It's all about the journey, not the destination. Each day being an adventure. Never knowing who you'll meet. Maybe getting invited to join a Hindu wedding party as they dance to music in the desert. Or your children trading with Tuareg nomad children at your camp in the golden dunes of the Sahara.
