You can share your content with family, friends, clubs, or the whole world - no sign up or membership is required for recipients to view the media you have shared with them.
With Share on Ovi, you can share your personal photos and videos via email, but without the hassle of clogged inboxes, rejected attachments, and lost media. Simply email your media to Share on Ovi. Share on OVI Mobile
Viewing media on Share on Ovi's mobile sharing site (http://share.ovi.com/mobile) you need a mobile device with a compatible browser and a data connection.
To share photos or video taken with your mobile phone or device, you need the ability to email your media to Share on Ovi, or use the Share Online application that is compatible with several Nokia N-series devices.
Remember that photos, and especially video files can be very large, and your carrier may charge extra for large data transfers!
Account for Sharing on OVI
Our basic free account provides unlimited storage and unlimited uploads. You can upload individual files up to 100mb in size.
To create an account, do the following:
- Click the Sign up link.
- Enter your desired User ID and password, and your email address. You can also optionally enter your location.
- Read the Terms of Service and select Sign Up to accept them and to create your account.
You receive a confirmation e-mail of your registration. The confirmation will include a code. You’ll need to enter that code back to activate your account.
The most common reason for not seeing a confirmation email is that it has been incorrectly tagged as spam by your mail program and sent to your junk mail file. To find the mail, just check in your junk mail folder. If you don’t find the confirmation email, please contact us.
When you create an account, a member ID is assigned to your account. Your media is stored with tags related to this ID, which is why it cannot be changed. Changing the ID would render your media links unusable.
Manage your account
To edit your profile, sign in, and go to Home > Profile.
If you want to delete your account, sign in, and go to Home > Profile. From the Actions list, select Delete my account.
User ID
The User ID tab under my profile contains information that makes up your member "card" that is seen by everyone. Your display name/slogan can be anything you like - a favorite saying, your name – that is displayed with your User ID. You can also add a profile photo for your card.
Your location (home city, state or zip) is used when you browse the member directory. Other members within a 150 mile radius will be displayed in the "nearby members" list
Member Profile
The Member Profile tab contains information you may want to share with others, and is displayed when someone looks at your profile. Add as much or as little detail as you like. You can decide yourself how much information you want to share with people viewing your profile and control who sees each section (anyone, members, your contacts only, or only you).
In the upper right of most pages on the site, you will see a link to "edit profile" above your member name. On the profile page, you can select who gets to see your activity, your contact information, your location and other information about you. For each of these items, you can select the following options: Only me (private), My Contacts only, All Members, or Anyone (public).
Message settings
In the Message settings tab you can control how Share on Ovi notifies you about activity on your account. Choose when or if you wish to receive notifications when other members share media with you, send you messages, or add content to your channels. You can choose to receive alerts only to your Share on Ovi inbox, or to have them forwarded to your email address.
In addition, when you create a Favorite, you can optionally set an alert to be notified when that item changes. You can manage which changes to watch for and how often alerts on favorites are sent from the alerts tab.
Account Tab
In the Account tab you can manage your general account settings such as account password, and the phone numbers and email addresses associated with your account.
You can also find out and change your upload secret word from the Account tab. When you sign up, Share on Ovi automatically generates a secret word that is used in the email upload addresses of each of your channels. When you change your upload secret word in the account tab, you are changing your upload secret word for all your channels.
Please note that when you change your upload secret word, the guest upload secret words for your channels are not affected. Channel-specific secret words are changed from the settings of the channel in question.
For more information about email uploading, see Upload Media through E-mail.

Select media
Share on Ovi is one of a new breed of Web 2.0 applications that combine the simplicity and ease of use of web applications with the richness of a client application. Many of the actions you can perform on your media require that the media items first be selected. Some commands in the actions list, for example, are disabled (greyed out) unless one or more items are selected.
Selecting media items in thumbnail view:
- • Click in the area in between the media items and drag a marquee around the items you wish to select.
- • You can select one or more media items with ctrl-click (apple-click on the Mac)
- • You can select or deselect an entire page of media items at a time with the select all | none link.
- • You can select a range from one item to another item by highlighting the first item with ctrl-click (or apple-click), then selecting the last item with shift-ctrlclick (or shift-apple click)
View media
Click on a thumbnail to view an image or other media file. If Share on Ovi cannot play the file format, your browser will launch the appropriate player on your computer, if available.
View a slideshow
When you are viewing a channel or a media item, choose the slideshow command from the actions list to view a slideshow of the contents of that channel.
Dealing with inappropriate media
Share on Ovi staff does not monitor, screen or pre-approve content provided by users. Members have the ability to flag content they feel is inappropriate. If any media is flagged within a specific channel by 5 or more members, the service automatically removes it from the channel. On each flag the channel owner is notified but we do not disclose who set the flag or any associated comments. After the content is removed the channel owner may appeal the action by contacting us. We urge members to exercise tolerance when flagging media and will promptly deal with any abuse of this feature. More details are included in our Terms of Service.
Upload Photos, Videos and Other Media to Share on OVI
Before uploading media to Share on Ovi, please ensure that you’ve read the Terms of Service and understand what is not allowed to be posted.
Supported File Types
Share on Ovi supports a wide range of file types including photos, videos, audio, and various document formats.
You can upload and share any type of supported file, but only certain types of photos and videos will show a thumbnail in the media view. If Share on Ovi does not recognize the file format, it is represented by an icon in your chanel. When you click on that icon, your browser will launch the appropriate player on your computer, if available.
Note that to minimize the possibility of spreading viruses or harmful files, Share on Ovi does not support executable files of any kind.
Supported file types: 3g2, 3gp, 3gp2, 3gpp, 3gpp2, aac, aif, aifc, aiff, amr, asf, asr, asx, au, avi, bmp, cad, cmx, cod, css, dib, doc, dot, dtd, dwf, fla, flv, gif, ico, ief, ifo, ipx, jfif, jpe, jpeg, jpg, kml, kmz, lsf, m1a, m1v, m3u, m4a, m4p, m4v, mdi, mid, midi, mov, movie, mp2, mp3, mp4, mpa, mpe, mpeg, mpg, mpp, mpv2, mqv, nsc, odf, odg, odp, ods, odt, ogg, pbm, pdf, pgm, png, pot, ppm, pps, ppt, psd, pub, qt, ra, ram, ras, rgb, rm, rmi, rtf, rtx, scd, snd, swf, tif, tiff, tsv, txt, vsd, vss, vst, vsx, vtx, wav, wax, wbmp, wm, wma, wml, wmp, wmv, wmx, wri, xbm, xla, xlc, xlm, xls, xlt, xlw, xml, xsd, xsl, xslt.

Resize media for upload
Uploading full-resolution photos takes a long time. If you don't need to share the full resolution file, you can save time by downsizing your photos using the resize option when using the multi drag drop upload option.
You can choose from these standard size options:
| Photo size (width) |
Recommended for |
| 640 pixels |
web/email sharing |
| 1024 pixels |
print up to 3.5" x 5" |
| 1600 pixels |
print up to 5" x 7" |
| original |
larger prints |
Video Uploading
Even a short 30-second video clip directly from your digital camera can require tens of megabytes and many, many minutes to upload to Share on Ovi, and since Share on Ovi automatically compresses your videos to make the online viewing experience better, there is no benefit in uploading full-resolution video clips.
You can convert your videos to smaller files prior to uploading to save time and bandwidth consumption using a tool like those suggested below:
1. Load your original videos into one of the following recommended video tools.
2. Export or save your videos using these video settings:
512 pixels wide
512 kbps bit rate
Leave frame rate and audio quality as original
3. Upload these new, smaller video files to Share on Ovi.
Ways to upload media
Share on Ovi allows you to upload media in a variety of ways. To upload a file, go to the Upload tab and select the desired upload method.
Upload from your PC or Mac using your web browser
You can upload media through your web browser by using either the basic upload or the multi drop drag upload.
In basic upload, simply select a destination channel and then browse to the files on your computer you want to upload. You can upload up to five files at one time. When you have selected the files, click Upload to upload them.
In multi drag drop upload you can upload files or folders by dragging them to the Image Uploader. When using the multi drag drop upload option, you can also resize your photos by selecting the desired size from the dop down menu.
Upload from your PC by using the Web Publishing Wizard
If you are a Windows user, you can also use the Web Publishing Wizard. It requires the installation of a small file to add Share on Ovi to the list of destinations you can send to. The Web Publishing Wizard allows you to select media items from your computer and upload them to Share on Ovi in a batch.
For a walk-through of how to setup and use the Web Publishing Wizard, go here:
http://share.ovi.com/tools/webpublishingwizard/
Upload through email.
You can upload files through email by using the unique uploading address every channel has. The address consists of your User ID, the channel name and your secret word. To select your secret word, go to Home > Profile > Accounts.
When you send an email to a channel's email upload address with photos, videos or other media items attached to it, those items are automatically uploaded to the channel.
You can upload media to Share on Ovi from any device or computer that supports email. The very simplest way to upload media to your account is to send it to your my media channel. To do this, create a new email message, attach your media files and send the message to:
UserID.SecretWord@share.ovi.com
The file is uploaded to your my media channel for storing until you decide to share it. For more information about the my media channel, see Your default channels.
To upload media to other channels, create a new email message, attach your media files and send the message to:
userid.secretword@share.ovi.com
You can also add a title to the media by adding the desired title to the subject line of the email message.
For example, if your User ID is "johnd", you have a channel named "travel", and your secret word is "fish", to upload media into your travel channel, you create a new email message as follows:
| To: |
johnd.travel.fish@share.ovi.com |
Attach the media files you want to upload and send the email. In this example, the media would appear in johnd's travel channel and in My Media channel with the title “A day in Rome”.
A cool tip for email uploads - Forward emails with media attachments to your channels
You know how your friends and family are always sending emails with media files attached? It's a drag having to click on each one of the files one by one in order to see them. And worst of all, they eventually become buried in your email inbox, which makes them hard to enjoy and share.
The solution? Forward them to Share on Ovi! Send them to one of you channels using UserID.channel.SecretWord@share.ovi.com, or you can simply send them to your My Media library by forwarding to UserID.SecretWord@share.ovi.com
Upload media from your camera phone
You can upload media directly from your camera phone by using either email or MMS to send the edia to your channel’s upload email address.
For more information about uploading through email, see upload through Email.
A cool tip for email uploads from your camera phone
Create an address book entry for each of your channels you'll be uploading media into. This saves you having to type the email upload address every time you send media.
Once you've captured your photo or video, just use your camera phone's built-in facility to send it, select the email upload address from your phone's address book and you're done!
Add media info with dot commands
Media posted on Share on Ovi can have a variety of information associated with it, including a text description, tags and location information. To add media information when uploading via email, use dot commands in the message body as follows:
.d [media description text]
The .d dot command adds a text description to all the media items being uploaded. Type .d, followed by a space, then your description text.
.t [tags]
The .t dot command adds tags to all the media items being uploaded. Type .t, followed by a space, then the tags you want, separated by spaces. To do multi-word tags, enclose the words in quotes. For example, typing golden retriever would effectively create two tags: golden and retriever. To have both words together as a single tag, you enclose both with quotes, like this: "golden retriever"
.l [location]
The .l (as in location) dot command "geolocates" your media items, associating your media items with a particular earth location. Type .l, followed by a space, then the location information you want, separated by commas. You can use city/state, postal codes, country, city/country, a specific street address, or even a place name.
For example:
.l Daytona Beach, FL
.l 98026
.l Mount Rainier
.l 123 Main St, Seattle, WA
.l Taco Bell, Woodinville, WA
.s [User IDs and email addresses]
The .s dot command makes Share on Ovi send a share email to the recipient. This email gives them access to the channel and contains thumbnails of the media items you are uploading, along with a short message. When someone receives the share email, they can click on any of the thumbnails to view that item on Ovi. You can type User IDs for other members as well as email addresses of members and non-members, separated by spaces.
.m [message]
The .m dot command adds a short message to the share email that is sent out to the people you have specified with the .s dot command. This dot command only works in conjunction with the .s command.
Creating new channels with dot-commands
To create a new channel when uploading via email, you can use dot commands in the message body.
Enter the uploading address as if the channel already exists. For example, johnd.rome.fish@share.ovi.com, if you want to create a channel called “rome”. Next, type the .n dot command in the message body. Share on Ovi recognizes that the channel does not exist and scans the message body for a .n command. If it finds one, Share on Ovi creates the new channel as specified by the command.
.n
The .n command creates a new channel based on the channel name in the email upload address. Type .n, followed by a space, then the namefor the new channel.
.n p
The .n p command creates a new private channel based on the channel name in the email upload address. Type .n p, followed by a space, then the name for the new channel.
Retrieving or deleting original media
The original version of your media is always available for download. Just click on the photo in 'media view' and the original appears in your browser window. Just right click and save it to your hard disk from there. You can also delete media from a specific channel or from Share on Ovi completely by using the “delete media from channel” action from within a channel, or using the “delete media” action from within My Media.
Organize Media with Channels
About channels
Channels are containers that help you organize and share your media. You can create channels for types of media, specific topics, or any other classification system you want. For example, you can create a channel that contains photos of your family, sports or countries, or you a channel for a specific trip or event.
When you sign up, Share on Ovi creates two special default channels for you: "my media" and "public". These channels cannot be deleted.
Your default channels
My Media
My Media is a private channel that only you can view. All the media you upload is stored in My Media and can then be shared from there in any number of other channels.
You can share media items directly from your My Media channel without first placing them into a channel. When you do this, Share on Ovi automatically creates a "direct to person" channel.
For more information about direct to person channels, see Sharing media.
Your Public Channel
Your public channel is an open, public channel that anyone can view. It cannot be deleted, renamed, or turned into a private channel. However, like channels you create yourself, you can control whether or not people are allowed to add comments or tags to media items in your public channel and allow other people to contribute to the channel.
Create channels
You can organize the content you upload into channels, for example by theme or media type.
To create a new channel:
- Go to Home > My Channels in the main menu
- Choose Create new channel from the actions list
- Enter a name for your channel. Channel names must be 3-15 characters long and they can contain numbers, letters, dashes and underscores, but no spaces. The channel name also becomes a part of the channel's email upload address.
- Enter a title and description for the channel. You can also set
- Select whether you want the channel to be public or private. You can also set the contribute access and options for you new channel. For more information, see Channel Settings.
- Click Create channel
Channel settings
To change the settings for an existing channel, go to My channels and do the following:
- Select the channel you want to work with
- Choose Channel settings from the actions list
Privacy settings
Your channel can be public or private. Public channels may be viewed by anyone, both other members and the general public. Private channels are only visible to people you share them with.
Your channels can have three types of participants: viewers, contributors, and moderators.
- Viewers - Can view a channel
- Contributors - Can view and contribute media to a channel
- Moderators - Can view, contribute and moderate (delete media in a channel, invite people to a private channel, and manage channel participants)
Whenever you share a channel with someone, that person is included in the participant list as a viewer. If you shared the channel from the website, and checked the option to let the recipient contribute to this channel, then the person will be shown in the participant list as a contributor.
In the case of private channels, the people in this list are the only people who will be able to view the channel. In the case of a public channel, the viewer list simply reflects people with whom you have sent a share email, notifying them about the channel.
Preventing use of your media without your permission
Share on Ovi does not control the use of media posted in public channels. You can control who has access to your media by placing them in private channels. Share on Ovi fully supports the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Instructions on how to report a copyright violation can be found in our Terms of Service.
Tags and comments
Use the settings in the options section to determine who can add comments and tags to your channel, see the participant list, and access high resolution versions of your media.
Allowing others to contribute to your channel
You may allow members as well as non-members to contribute media to your channels. This is useful for things such as group travelogue channels (in which the travelers all contribute media to the channel), event channels (in which the event participants contribute media to the channel), and many other scenarios.
The contribute access settings allow other people to upload media to your channel. You can allow any member to upload media to your channel.
You can also allow non-members to upload media to your channel using the channel's guest upload address. This option is useful when you want to invite people who are not members to upload media. For example, you could put a card on every table at a wedding reception asking people to upload any photos they take to the guest upload address. All the guests would have to do would be to email any media they have to that email address and they are done!
There are some implications when you allow other people to contribute media to your channels:
Member Contributors
When members contribute media to one of your channels, that media is uploaded to their account, even though it will be visible in your channel. The bandwidth used is counted against their account and they are responsible for ensuring that the media meets the Share on Ovi Terms of Service agreement.
Non-Member Contributors
When non-members contribute media to one of your channels, that media is uploaded to your my media library. You are responsible for ensuring that the media meets the Share on Ovi Terms of Service Agreement.
Security Implications
The share e-mail sent to non-members contains an email address link that allows them to upload media directly to your channel via email. This email address is called the "guest upload address". Please note that if they forward the share email, others will be able to upload to your channel as well. If you find that you are getting unwanted media uploaded into your channel, there are two changes you can make in the "contribute access" section of your channel settings:
- You can change the secret word in your channel's guest upload address. To do this, go to Home > My channels > settings to change the secret word.
- You can disable the guest upload address altogether. To do this, go to Home > My channels > settings and unselect “Allow non-members to upload media using this channel”.
Putting media into other channels
You can add media items to any other channel while viewing them in you’re my media library or any channel. To do this, select one or more media items and use the "add to other channels" command. You can then select the destination channel from the list, or type the names of several channels in the box, separated by semicolons or spaces. Remember to use the fully qualified name of the channels you type in. For example, johnd.italy, suzy.family, etc. You can also add multiple items to another channel at once. In channel view, select the media items, then use the "add to other channels" command to put all those items in one or more other channels.
Tags
Tags make it easy for you and others to find media quickly. When you are viewing a single media item, you can add tags to it by clicking the add link beneath the item. Enter as many tags as you like, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons. Enclose multi-word tags in quotes, for example "Italy Trip". By default, other members can tag your media items. You can change this by disabling the option in channel settings.
Sharing Media
About sharing media
Sharing is the heart and soul of Share on Ovi. You can share individual media items, entire channels and almost any page you can view. If the page can be shared, When you are viewing a page, look in the actions list to see if a share command is available.
When Share on Ovi receives your email it stores the attached files in your secure account and forwards a lightweight graphical preview email to your recipients. This preview email downloads quickly into your friend's inbox, takes up very little of their email storage limit and gives them a quick look of all the files you've sent. They can click and view in detail only the files they want - when they want. Also, all the files you've sent are privately archived in special direct-to-person channels between you and the recipient, so they can easily go back and review anything you've sent them in the past .
When your recipients click on your media files (like photos, videos and audio), they play right in place on a Share on Ovi webpage. Non-media file types, like word processed documents or spreadsheets will automatically download to their desktop and launch in the usual application. No sign-up is required for recipients to view your shared media or files. You can also add a message to your share email.
If you’ve shared something with a friend, but your friend says that they never received the email, have your friend check their spam folder in case it is there. Your friend can add share.ovi.com to their non-spam list so they will receive future emails.
Sharing from my media
You can share media items directly from your my media library without first placing them into a channel. When you share individual media items from your my media library, Share on Ovi creates a special private channel between you and each recipient of the share and places the selected media items into it. These are called "Direct to Person" channels and they appear in your channels list. Settings on direct to person channels are limited to title and description.
To share media items from your my media library:
- Select my media from the main menu
- Select the media items you wish to share.
- Choose the Share selected media command from the actions list.
Sharing a channel
You can also share your own channels or other members' public channels. When you share from a channel, you are actually sharing the channel itself, not just the media items you select. When you select media items before sharing a channel, thumbnails of those items will be included in the share email that goes out to your recipients.
To share a channel:
- Choose channels from the main menu
- Select the channel you wish to share
- Select any specific media items you want to have placed as thumbnails.
- Choose Share this channel from the actions pane
- Enter the people with whom you'd like to share the channel. You can enter a combination of User IDs, email addresses, or mobile numbers, separated by semicolons. As you type, Share on Ovi will attempt to match with people you have in your contacts list and make suggestions. If the recipient is not a member, just enter their email address. You can also change the name, subject and message on your share email, and specify or not you wish to use your email reply address.
If you are sharing your own channel, you can also allow the recipients to contribute media to your channel. Do this by checking the option to "let this list of people contribute media to this channel". The share email your recipients receive will contain an email link, which they can click to upload media to your channel via email.
Sharing other pages
Most pages that you can view on Share on Ovi can be shared. You can share a member profile of someone interesting or even a page of search results. While viewing a page, choose the "Share" command to share the page.
Sharing through email
Share on Ovi makes it possible, with just a small change in how you address your email, to share files to another person - just like you do in email today - and avoid all the traditional problems with email sharing.
To share media through email, use the dot commands. For more information, see Add media information by using dot command.
Favorites
To bookmark media that you like, you can add it to your favorites by selecting add to favorites from the media file’s action list. When you create a favorite, you can also set an alert in order to be notified when that item changes.
Select favorites from the main menu to see the list of media items, channels and other members you have marked as favorites.
Contacts
To keep track of people you interact with regularly on Share on Ovi, for example by sharing content, you can use the Contacts feature. Share on Ovi uses this information to help you when during the sharing process. For example, when you are typing User ids or email addresses for share recipients, Share on Ovi automatically making suggestions from your Contacts as you type.
Share on Ovi automatically adds people to your contacts list whenever you share with them through the .s dot command in email. When you share from the Share on Ovi website, the option to add recipients to your contacts list is on by default.
Relationships
The my relationships tab, located on the contacts page, shows all your sharing relationships with both members and non-members. You can display only people sharing with you, people you are sharing with, and people with whom you have mutual sharing relationships.
Messages
Share on Ovi has a simple messaging system that is used for communications from Share on Ovi and other members. Messages that you receive from Share on Ovi will be echoed into your Share on Ovi inbox. Share on Ovi offers you the flexibility to control the way alerts are sent to you via email so, depending on your alerts configuration, some messages may not be going directly to your regular email. However, you can always check your Share on Ovi inbox (click the little envelope icon in the upper right of any page) and see all your Ovi-related message.
Messages include:
- Share notifications and personal messages from other members
